Sustainable House Day 2016 in Ballarat

This year it is on Sunday 11th September, with a large list of houses all over the country available for you to visit and be inspired. The full list of houses is still being updated, so keep an eye on the Sustainable House Day website, and register there to attend. It is admiral that so many people are willing to open their doors to their private homes, share their insights and proudly display how they’ve embraced sustainability.

In previous years, there has been a wide variety of homes, each of which vary with their approach to what ‘sustainability’ means to them. I’ve written before about what a truly sustainable house is, and how there are always areas of compromise and prioritising what are the most important aspects for you. You might see a traditional period home in town that have been retro-fitted with insulation, double-glazing and solar hot water to improve energy-efficiency. Or a very ‘normal’ looking family home on a block out of town that is completely off-grid with their energy and water. Or perhaps a home that focuses more on natural materials such as mud brick or straw bale construction. Some homes have completely embraced passive solar design principles…while others haven’t. It is a broad spectrum and I think you can find something new to learn with each example, and hopefully be inspired by different approaches!

There are a number of homes in the Ballarat region which you can also find on the local BREAZE (Ballarat Renewable Energy and Zero Emissions) website. BREAZE and the ‘Smart Living Ballarat’ crew have also arranged to start the day with some Sustainable House Presentations by local professionals (Dale Boucher, Mick Moloney and me!) – kicking off at 9am at the Ballarat Library.

I’ll be there to present a ‘virtual tour’ of some of my current projects, so you can gain an insight into the architectural design process, and how sustainability is approached holistically. Sustainable homes are a lot more than just adding solar panels, and this presentation will provide some helpful professional advice about the key areas to focus on to get maximum benefits and savings (for you, your wallet, and the planet!).

If you know anyone who might be interested in learning more about sustainable homes, please let them know about this free event – thanks – I’d love to see a some friendly faces there! See you on Sunday 11th September 9am – 10:30am at the Ballarat Library. Don’t forget to register here to attend.

Are you planning on attending Sustainable House Day this year? Or have you been in the past? Don’t be shy – let me know in the comments below!

This series is all about Ballarat’s Inspiring young women leaders. Parlour is all about supporting women in architecture, but since there are only a small handful of female architects in Ballarat,  I wanted to introduce you to some of my tribe of inspiring women who are doing quite diverse roles in the community. They include photographers and videographers, creative professionals, architects, artists, mentors, a councillor, and the founder of a local women’s charity…read on to find out if anyone you know is featured here! This post is part of my #Ballarat series of guest posts for Archi Parlour on instagram.

This series is all about Ballarat’s Contemporary Architecture. Our city is more well known for it’s heritage buildings, but there are some great examples of contemporary architecture too… and hopefully many more to come in the future! So I wanted to showcase a few examples of our most popular new architecture…do you recognise any of these? Continue reading

Ballarat Heritage Architecture (Parlour Instagram Guest-Host Series)

Talina Edwards Female Architect New Homes Houses Renovations Extensions Rural Central VictoriaThis post is part of my #Ballarat series of guest posts for Archi Parlour on instagram.

This series is all about Ballarat’s Heritage Buildings – as we have a wealth of historic architecture, dating back to the days of the gold rush when the city boomed in the late 1800s. Our city has many beautiful buildings, and it was difficult to narrow it down to just seven favourites – so here’s my selection. I wonder if any of your faves made the cut?  Continue reading

Parlour Instagram Guest-Host: Ballarat Series

Talina Edwards Female Architect New Homes Houses Renovations Extensions Rural Central VictoriaThe Australian Archi Parlour is a fabulous website full of helpful research about women, equity and architecture.

PARLOUR: a space to speak – bringing together research, informed opinion and resources; generating debate and discussion; expanding the spaces for women in Australian architecture.

Last year I supported their crowdfunding campaign which raised funds for their ongoing research. As part of my ‘reward’ for supporting their cause, I was the guest host guest host over at the Parlour’s instagram account for one week back in December. I was honoured to have the opportunity to showcase some of Ballarat favourite heritage buildings, some contemporary architecture, and some inspiring local women who are helping lead Ballarat to a better future.

“We are handing over the Instagram account to a different host every week. This is an opportunity to present a complex picture of architecture and the people involved in it.” http://archiparlour.org/

As I was able to choose my theme, I decided that my three posts each day would be in each of these categories:
  1. Ballarat heritage architecture
  2. Ballarat contemporary architecture
  3. Ballarat inspiring women

So there was a total of 21 posts, with seven in each category. It was quite difficult to narrow down my selections! I’ll be sharing these posts here on blog in the coming weeks, and I look forward to hearing which are your favourites!

Each post was tagged #ParlourInstaGuest so if you want to follow along and see the amazingly diverse range of posts from all of the guests over the past 6 or so months, and into the future! Oh, and I can be found at instagram here if you’d like to connect: @talina_edwards
