Open House Ballarat 2017!

Open House Ballarat website

Have you heard the exciting* news?!

(*Well there’s plenty of people who are excited, and I hope you will be too!)

Open House Melbourne has joined forces with the City of Ballarat and Visit Ballarat to bring the first regional event here to Ballarat! Hurrah! Welcome to the inaugural Open House Ballarat! It really is like another gold-rush of creative goodness happening here right now.

As co-chair of the Ballarat Regional Architects Network (along with another local architect Mick Moloney), it has been great getting to know the fabulous team at Open House Melbourne in the lead up to this event. We are very proud that this is an opportunity to share our love for architecture and design and celebrate it with our community and visitors to our city.

My photo of the fabulous old-school paper program, printed by The Saturday Paper – love it!

There will be a range of buildings open (not just ‘houses’!) over the weekend of October 28th and 29th, plus a film screening plus kids activities and more which are FREE! Note that some open houses do require advance booking as places are strictly limited. See more at http://www.openhousemelbourne.org/ballarat/ballarat-buildings.

What are my top picks, I hear you ask?! We are spoilt for choice, but here’s a few that I haven’t been to yet! (And there’s a stack on the program that I love but have already visited.)
Open House Ballarat Two Halves House

The two-halves house is a gorgeous example of contemporary residential architecture, and designed by my mates! The owners did an amazing job by owner-building (project-managing) this themselves, so kudos to the whole team!

Open House Ballarat Bishops Palace

For those who love heritage homes and a bit of grandeur from yesteryear, check out Bishops Palace as it is sure to impress! And those pitched gable-ends are so on-trend again right now ;o)

Open House Ballarat ACU Chapel

I’m keen to check out the chapel at ACU which was recently renovated by local architects – I love the use of timber, stone and the contemporary stained glass window with the interesting trussed roof. I’m always fascinated by spiritual buildings.

Open House Ballarat Integrated Health Services

The brand new Ballarat Community Health building appears to have the most sustainable design features out of the Open Houses in Ballarat (which is what we love to see!) and it looks like a lovely, light-filled space that promotes wellness.

The Open House Ballarat weekend is also part of Ballarat’s Season of the Arts program, so there are lots of great reasons to enjoy our beautiful city at the moment! Hope to see you around town experiencing how great architecture can make a difference in our world!

Have you ever been to an Open House event? Which Ballarat building would you love to see? I’ve love to hear about it in the comments below!

We aim to answer questions about sustainable design, green buildings and healthy homes, also with reference to our local climate (Regional Ballarat area and Melbourne) in future articles. Don’t forget you can sign up to receive our news so you won’t miss out on our posts!

This post is part of my #Ballarat series of guest posts for Archi Parlour on instagram.

This series is all about Ballarat’s Contemporary Architecture. Our city is more well known for it’s heritage buildings, but there are some great examples of contemporary architecture too… and hopefully many more to come in the future! So I wanted to showcase a few examples of our most popular new architecture…do you recognise any of these? Continue reading

Ballarat Heritage Architecture (Parlour Instagram Guest-Host Series)

Talina Edwards Female Architect New Homes Houses Renovations Extensions Rural Central VictoriaThis post is part of my #Ballarat series of guest posts for Archi Parlour on instagram.

This series is all about Ballarat’s Heritage Buildings – as we have a wealth of historic architecture, dating back to the days of the gold rush when the city boomed in the late 1800s. Our city has many beautiful buildings, and it was difficult to narrow it down to just seven favourites – so here’s my selection. I wonder if any of your faves made the cut?  Continue reading

Parlour Instagram Guest-Host: Ballarat Series

Talina Edwards Female Architect New Homes Houses Renovations Extensions Rural Central VictoriaThe Australian Archi Parlour is a fabulous website full of helpful research about women, equity and architecture.

PARLOUR: a space to speak – bringing together research, informed opinion and resources; generating debate and discussion; expanding the spaces for women in Australian architecture.

Last year I supported their crowdfunding campaign which raised funds for their ongoing research. As part of my ‘reward’ for supporting their cause, I was the guest host guest host over at the Parlour’s instagram account for one week back in December. I was honoured to have the opportunity to showcase some of Ballarat favourite heritage buildings, some contemporary architecture, and some inspiring local women who are helping lead Ballarat to a better future.

“We are handing over the Instagram account to a different host every week. This is an opportunity to present a complex picture of architecture and the people involved in it.” http://archiparlour.org/

As I was able to choose my theme, I decided that my three posts each day would be in each of these categories:
  1. Ballarat heritage architecture
  2. Ballarat contemporary architecture
  3. Ballarat inspiring women

So there was a total of 21 posts, with seven in each category. It was quite difficult to narrow down my selections! I’ll be sharing these posts here on blog in the coming weeks, and I look forward to hearing which are your favourites!

Each post was tagged #ParlourInstaGuest so if you want to follow along and see the amazingly diverse range of posts from all of the guests over the past 6 or so months, and into the future! Oh, and I can be found at instagram here if you’d like to connect: @talina_edwards
