Is 2021 the year of the Passivhaus?

Passive House is gathering momentum down under.

Late last year Sanctuary’s editor Anna Cumming chatted with two expert practitioners (Talina Edwards and Sven Maxa) about the benefits of the building standard and whether it’s poised for a great leap forward in 2021.

The question was posed; “Is 2021 the year of the Passivhaus?”

No prizes for guessing the answer!

But if you want to know why, the conversation covered responses in relation to economics, sustainability, bushfires, pandemic, longevity, payback, conversion, media and more….

There’s a the recording available of the panel discussion here via Design Matters who hosted the event as part of their InspoExpo series.

The interview is featured in the current edition (Issue 54) of our favourite magazine, Sanctuary! You can check out the digital article of our interview for free here

but we recommend purchasing a copy of the whole magazine as it’s full of inspiring goodness to flick through while enjoying a quiet cuppa (including seeing Sven’s award-winning Certified-Passivhaus ‘Earth House’ in the interview).

This issue’s special theme is all about ‘Renovation and Retrofit’ and some of our favourite features inside include:

  • “Passivhaus in Australia” (the book we helped create last year!) gets reviewed!
  • There’s a gorgeous Certified-Passivhaus strawbale home in Wanaka, New Zealand (great article by Rachael Bernstone)
  • Super helpful advice about retrofitting existing houses by Jenny Edwards
  • An inspiring Passivhaus (Enerphit) renovation by John Tallis where quality is more important than quantity
  • + loads more!

You can find Sanctuary in all good newsagents or order online here.

We’ve been grateful to have appeared in Sanctuary magazine in the past for our Owl Woods Passive House too – you can find out more about that issue here.
